Learning outcomes of course unit

The ability to make decisions and carry out the necessary actions in unforeseen conditions, in particular during emergency situations and receiving a distress signal at sea, for the protection and safety of passengers, crew, ship and cargo, to coordinate search and rescue operations.

Knowledge of international requirements for ship rescue equipment.

Skills in using life-saving means and equipment and maintaining equipment, devices and systems in operational condition, which will ensure the safety of the ship and people.

Skills in conducting training sessions on abandoning the ship and the ability to handle lifeboats, liferafts and emergency boats, devices and means for their launching, as well as equipment for them.

Knowledge of types of fire, the principle of operation of fire extinguishing systems, the ability to extinguish fires using appropriate equipment, including fires of fuel systems; the ability to organize firefighting training.

Knowledge of methods and means of fire prevention, fire detection and extinguishing, fighting for the survivability of the ship and methods of personal survival.

First aid skills and the ability to apply medical instructions and medical advice received over the radio, including the ability to take effective action based on knowledge in the event of accidents or illnesses.

Knowledge of methods, measures and equipment for combating pollution of the marine environment from ships, as well as precautionary measures that must be taken to prevent pollution of the marine environment and fulfill obligations in accordance with the relevant requirements of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, as amended.

Knowledge of international and domestic regulations regarding the safety of human life at sea and the protection of the marine environment and ensuring their compliance.

Personal survival skills, ensuring personal safety and knowledge of public duties on ships.

Knowledge of basic ship security concepts and the ability to analyze and compare ship security information.

Content of course unit

The acquisition of learning outcomes for the educational component is achieved by studying the educational material in the following sections:

- Basics of safety and protection at sea.

- Basics of the organization and procedures of rescue at sea. Personal safety and public duties of seafarers.

- The struggle of the crew for the survivability of the ship.

- Ship rescue equipment, their use and operation.

- Ensuring protection of ships, cargo, crew and passengers.

- Provision of medical assistance and medical care on board.
