Learning outcomes of course unit | Knowledge of: - the main provisions of international rules, codes, standards and recommendations concerning the transportation of various types of cargo, including dangerous goods by specialized vessels; - design features, technological equipment, cargo systems and understanding of the basic principles of safe operation of specialized vessels; - precautionary measures regarding the impact of dangerous and harmful cargoes on the safety of human life and the vessel; - strength limitations of the constructional parts of bulk carriers and tankers; - international requirements regarding the design features of tankers in order to prevent pollution of the marine environment. Ability: - to establish procedures for safe handling of cargoes on specialized vessels, including stowage and securing of heavy and oversized cargoes; - to identify and assess the defects of and damages to hatch covers, cargo spaces and ballast tanks of specialized vessels. |

Content of course unit | The main purpose of studying the academic discipline "Operation of Specialized Vessels" is to provide cadets and students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in handling and stowing the cargoes, features of design and operation of specialized vessels (container vessels, bulk carriers, multipurpose vessels, oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas tankers and RO-RO vessels). - Section 1. Classification and international maritime legislation for the operation of specialized vessels; - Section 2. Operation of container vessels; - Section 3. Operation of RO-RO vessels; - Section 4. Operation of bulk carriers; - Chapter 5. Operation of oil tankers; - Chapter 6. Operation of chemical tankers; - Chapter 7. Operation of gas tankers; - Section 8. Operation of multipurpose and HEAVY LIFT vessels; - Section 9. Technical supervision of cargo gear, cargo spaces and ballast tanks. |
