Learning outcomes of course unit

Knowledge:

  • of the place and role of maritime transport in world trade and economy;
  • of the concept of a navigator, the basic principles of his work , international documents regulating the rank assignment to the command staff of seagoing vessels;
  • of the principles of international and national requirements for seafarers’ training, certification and watchkeeping, principles of certification of crew members of sea vessels in Ukraine, and prospects of their professional growth;
  • of the typical crew structure of the ship, the order of the ship`s composition and the responsibilities of each crew member of the ship;
  • of the principles of operation and purpose of port services and departments interacting with the crew of a merchant ship in port;
  • of the main sea routes used in shipping, oceans and seas, canals and straits, their classification;
  • and distinction of international sea cargo flows, and distribution of the main cargo turnover of the largest ports in the world;
  • of international organizations and the main Conventions developed and adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO);
  • of classification and technical and operational characteristics of different types of ships, their transport features of operation;
  • of the organization of sea transportation by various forms of shipping and the characteristics and features of transport and technological systems for the delivery of goods;
  • of job descriptions of navigators;

Ability:

  • to use terminology in the navigation specialty;
  • to chart the main cargo flows and their main sea routes;
  • to classify sea routes and describe them;
  • to describe navigational conditions of the main straits and channels;
  • to understand the characteristics of the port, which is associated with the delivery of goods by sea;
  • to use the IMO International Conventions.

Content of course unit

The main purpose of studying the academic discipline is the formation of basic concepts of the nature and specifics of the navigator`s work, international shipping, marine routes, international organizations, conventions regulating the work of the ship’s crew, and the acquisition by cadets-navigators of a complex of knowledge about their future profession, which will produce effective outcomes when studying professional disciplines, which can be applied while working in positions provided  in the qualification characteristics of the specialty, and meet the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers with the Manila Amendments.

  • Chapter 4. The International Maritime Organization and its role in ensuring the safe operation of the world`s fleet;
