| Learning outcomes of course unit | Knowledge of the sources of pollution of the World Ocean and understanding the consequences of pollution for humans and the marine environment. Understanding the importance of effective measures aimed at protecting the environment. Knowledge of marine engineers’ duties to supervise and control the compliance with all requirements aimed at preventing marine environment pollution. Knowledge and understanding of the main international and national legislation on the protection of the marine environment. Knowledge and understanding of operational and organizational-legal measures to ensure environment protection of the World Ocean. Knowledge of shipboard pollution control procedures and ability to use all associated equipment. Knowledge of mandatory environmental safety documentation required to be carried on board a ship. Knowledge of IMO requirements for shipboard equipment intended to prevent pollution, including its design features and principles of operation. Knowledge of IMO requirements regarding permissible discharges and emissions into the sea and the atmosphere. Knowledge of organizational and technical measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency of ships. Understanding of professional responsibility within one’s area of specialization in relation to environmental safety during ship operation. |

| Content of course unit | The acquisition of learning outcomes for the educational component is achieved by studying the educational material in the following sections: - Main areas of regulation of environmental safety of seagoing ships. - The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 73/78 as the basis of environmental safety of ships. - Prevention of environmental risks associated with ballast water and anti-fouling systems of ships. |
