Learning outcomes of course unit |
- Knowledge of the structure, basic physical and chemical properties and areas of application of metals.
- Knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of electrochemistry: redox processes, the occurrence of electrode potentials, the principles of operation of chemical current sources.
- Knowledge of the electrochemical properties of metals and alloys; chemical current sources.
- Knowledge of the mechanism of corrosion of metals and alloys and methods of protecting equipment from corrosion.
- Ability to protect the ship and ship equipment from corrosion (electrochemical protection).
- Ability to ensure efficient operation of batteries.
- The ability to use chemical thinking skills, that is, a complex of theoretical and concrete practical knowledge about the composition, properties, structure of substances and materials, the patterns of their transformations, and areas of application.
- The ability to navigate certain issues of chemistry when studying special disciplines or directly in practical activities.

- General characteristics of the metallic state. Physical and chemical properties of metals.
- Electrochemical processes. Electrode potentials.
- Galvanic cells. Chemical sources of electric current (CSC).
- Batteries. Operational characteristics of CSC and requirements for their use.
- Corrosion of metals and alloys. Types of corrosion processes. Corrosion of ships and ship equipment.
- Protection of metals and alloys from corrosion. Electrochemical protection. Comprehensive protection of ships and ship structures from corrosion.
