Learning outcomes of course unit
  • Knowledge of the structure of a modern ship's automated electric drive, its components and elements, classification of electric drives;
  • Knowledge of the energy properties of electric drives, indicators of reliability and stability of their operation, static and dynamic modes of starting, braking and adjusting the speed of electric motors as part of a ship electric drive;
  • Knowledge and ability to analyze typical schemes of control, backup start and protection of ship electric drives of direct and alternating current of mechanisms and systems of the main and auxiliary power plant, deck mechanisms and lifting equipment, mechanisms of the engine room and cargo complex;
  • Knowledge of electromechanical properties and understanding of the features of the operation of controlled systems of DC and AC electric drives with semiconductor converters;
  • Knowledge of circuit solutions and element base of modern ship electric drives, methods of calculating parameters and the ability to use them to select the elements of the power channel of an automated electric drive that give it the desired properties: motors, energy converters of various types, means of electromagnetic compatibility;
  • Understanding of electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic control systems of ship mechanisms;
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems operating in flammable atmospheres and explosive areas, ability to carry out maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic systems operating in such high-risk areas;
  • Knowledge of diagnostic methods, inspections, maintenance and the ability to use them to troubleshoot repairs;
  • Knowledge of safety requirements when working with ship electrical systems and readiness to comply with them in professional activities;
  • Ability to analyze methods for optimizing the energy performance of the electric drive and the ability to use them to select the power of electric motors, determine the option of energy-efficient operation and ensure the standard quality of electricity;
  • Ability to analyze and identify possible malfunctions according to the scheme and according to the results of parameter measurements and the performance of the necessary calculations;
  • Ability to carry out computer simulation of a specific circuit of an energy converter or electric drive as a whole and the ability to analyze electromagnetic, electromechanical and energy properties and indicators of various electric drive systems;
  • Ability to analyze and substantiate the advantages and disadvantages of competing DC and AC controlled ship electric drive systems;
  • Ability to use regulatory documentation and willingness to comply with applicable rules, norms and standards.
