Learning outcomes of course unit |
- Knowledge of static and dynamic characteristics of the main semiconductor elements of power electronics;
- Knowledge of the basic schema-technical solutions of basic devices: an uncontrolled and controlled rectifier; a thyristor voltage regulator, DC-DC and DC-AC converters, a power converter with pulse width modulation, a frequency-controlled electric drive;
- The ability to connect power and control circuits of basic power electronics devices;
- The ability to perform basic settings and carry out diagnostics of basic power electronic devices.

Content of course unit |
- Introduction to the subject. Definition of power electronics. Key features and trends in energy management. The key as the main element of power circuits. Examples of energy conversion. Tools for analysis and working out of power circuits.
- A power diode. A diode as a key. A volt-ampere characteristic of a power diode. Basic technical parameters.
- A power bipolar transistor. The basic structure and functioning. Static and dynamic characteristics. Basic transistor control schemes. Examples of use as a key.
- Power MOSFET and JFET. The basic structure and functioning. Switching characteristics. Basic technical parameters. SiC MOSFET, Full SiC Modules.
- An IGBT. The basic structure and functioning. Basic technical parameters. Hybrid SiC Modules. Basic transistor control schemes. Examples of use as a key.
- A thyristor. The basic structure and functioning. Static and dynamic characteristics. Basic technical parameters. Types of thyristors: SCR, GTO and IGCT, MCT, SITh. Triac, dinistor. Snubber and control circuits. Application examples.
- A diode rectifier. A single-phase and three-phase rectifier. A filter in the rectifier. Methods of voltage stabilization. Application examples.
- A controlled rectifier. A single-phase and three-phase controlled rectifier. A rectifier with a forced commutation. Application examples.
- DC-DC converters. Step-down converter (Buck Converter). Increasing converter (Boost Converter). Buck-Boost Converter. Application examples.
- Inverters. Single-phase and three-phase voltage and current inverters. A PWM principle. An overview of common schemes and the element base. Control of inverters using the feedback. Application examples.
- AC-AC converters. Single-phase and three-phase voltage regulators. Single-phase and three-phase cycloconverters. Basic schemes and application examples.
