| Learning outcomes of course unit | Understanding the role of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the principles of oversight of compliance with requirements for the safety of life at sea and the prevention of environmental pollution; Knowledge of amendments to international maritime conventions and codes that have entered into force in recent years; Knowledge of the composition, content, and validity periods of mandatory documents required to be carried on board a ship in accordance with international conventions, depending on the ship type; Understanding the responsibilities of the ship’s management personnel in ensuring the functioning of the Safety Management System (SMS) on board, and the ability to supervise measures for preparing ship equipment, structures, and systems for port State control inspections; Understanding the requirements of international conventions regarding ship surveys and the maintenance of the validity of ship certificates; Ability to make appropriate entries in shipboard documentation; Knowledge of the principles of monitoring compliance with sanitary requirements within the scope of responsibility of ship engineers. |

| Content of course unit | The acquisition of learning outcomes for the educational component is achieved by studying the following topics: - International obligations and responsibilities of the flag State, port State, and coastal State. Recognized organizations and requirements applicable to them. Certificates and other mandatory shipboard documents in accordance with the requirements of international conventions. - Memoranda of Understanding and their role in port State control related to the safe operation of ships and the prevention of pollution. Port State control procedures. - Ensuring oversight of compliance with the technical requirements of SOLAS 1974 for the safe operation of ships. - Conventional and technical supervision of ships by the flag State. The Harmonized System of Survey and Certification (HSSC). Ship surveys. - Ensuring ship energy efficiency. Review of adopted amendments and updates to international conventions and codes. - Supervision of the sanitary and technical condition of ships in accordance with standards aimed at preventing risks to human health and the marine environment. |
