Learning outcomes of course unit

Successful completion of the program of the educational discipline "Manoeuvering and ship handling " involves the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

As a result of studying the discipline "Manoeuvering and ship handling ", the cadet/student should know:

1) the main characteristics of the vessel during its movement in various sailing conditions; the usage of simple analytical dependencies for forces and arms of forces, parameters of the ship's motion, presentation of information for ship handling purposes;

2) ship handling methods, taking into account the external conditions and the place of sailing: when sailing in conditions of wind and current, in shallow waters and in channels, in the traffic separation zone;

3) ship handling during mooring, anchoring and towing operations;

4) ship handling in critical conditions: sailing in adverse weather conditions, ice;

5) types of movement adjustments when using means of automatic control (AUC) at slow speed.

Skills:

As a result of studying the discipline "Manoeuvering and ship handling", the cadet/ student should be able to:

1) apply the necessary steering wheel aids, engine controls, automatic control in various sailing conditions;

2) use the limits of safe operation of the ship's main power plant, steering and power systems during normal manoeuvers;

3) make all necessary decisions regarding mooring and anchoring, which are based on a proper assessment of the maneuvering characteristics of the vessel and the main power plant, and forces acting during mooring or anchoring;

4) When underway, assess the influence of shallow waters and confined waters, ice, shores, tidal conditions, closely moving vessels, bow and stern waves from their vessel for safe manoeuvering under various loading and weather conditions.
