Learning outcomes of course unit

Successful completion of the program of the educational discipline "Seamanship Practice" involves obtaining by the cadet the following learning outcomes:

  • Ability to transmit and receive visual signals using Morse code.
  • Ability to use the International Code of Signals.
  • Knowledge of the basics of anchoring and mooring operations. Safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the steering device and commands to the helmsman.
  • Knowledge of the content, application and objectives of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea. Navigation lights and their characteristics. Fog signals of a ship underway.
  • Ability to use ship's lights and shapes at anchor and in the shallow waters. Fog signals.

Use of the International Code of Signals.

Transmitting and receiving information using visual signals.

The concept of ship's navigation lights disposition. Vessel's navigation lights and their characteristics. Fog signals of a vessel underway.

Scheme and composition of the anchor arrangement. General concepts of anchoring. Safety procedures when anchoring. Lights and shapes of the ship at anchor. Lights and shapes of a ship in the shallow waters. Fog signals.

Composition of the mooring gear and the scheme of the vessel at the berth with the name of the mooring ropes. Safety procedures during mooring operations. Mooring ropes used on ships.

Components of steering gear’s equipment. Keeping the ship on a given course. Commands to the helmsman.

Equipment (if applicable) Transas NTPRO 5000 simulator, NS 4000 version (6 full mission bridge - simulators operating individually or in a network and an instructor workplace)
