Successful study of the academic discipline " Radar and radionavigation systems " involves the following learning outcomes:

  1. Knowledge of fundamentals of radar, radionavigation systems and automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA).
  2. Knowledge of the configuration of a marine radar system, its composition and principles of basic radar (radar transmitters and receivers, antenna-waveguide devices, ship navigation radar indicators, secondary radars).
  3. Ability to process, interpret and analyze information obtained from radar, including range, bearing, course and speed of other vessels, time and distance of closest approach, display of relative and true motion, parallel indexing.
  4. The main types of ARPA, their characteristics, display of information and the performance standards; the dangers of over-reliance on ARPA.
  5. Ability to process, interpret and analyze information received from ARPA, including methods of capturing targets and their limitations, true and relative vectors, graphical display of information on targets and danger areas, receiving and analyzing information, critical echo signals, exclusion areas and trial maneuvers, use of operational warnings and system tests.
  6. Knowledge of AIS ship equipment, basic characteristics, types of AIS data. Displaying AIS information.
  7. Knowledge of ship ground and satellite navigation systems, methods of determining coordinates.
