Learning outcomes of course unit

Successful study of the academic discipline " Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)" involves obtaining the following results:

  • understanding of the general principles of the construction of the GMDSS and the main factors necessary for the safe and effective use of all subsystems and equipment of the GMDSS;
  • knowledge of the definition of maritime areas of the GMDSS, the composition of radio equipment of ships;
  • knowledge of the basic technical and operational characteristics of terrestrial and satellite communication systems, systems for transmission of maritime safety information, radio equipment of rescue vehicles;
  • knowledge of communication procedures in cases of distress, urgency and safety, as well as in normal conditions;
  • knowledge of the means of preventing the transmission of false distress signals and the procedure for their cancellation;
  • knowledge of the order of keeping a watch in the GMDSS, keeping a GMDSS Radio log book;
  • possession of ship reporting systems, ship identification systems and procedures for participating in them;
  • knowledge of the procedures of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual in matters of the organization of radio communications for search and rescue at sea;
  • knowledge of the organization and procedure for providing medical consultations and medical assistance via radio;
  • the ability to determine priority means and communication systems in specific situations at sea;
  • the ability to correctly and effectively use the GMDSS equipment in cases of distress, urgency and safety, including in conditions of interference;
  • the ability to organize the reception of Maritime Safety Information, both coastal and in NAVAREA;
  • the ability to correctly and effectively use the radio equipment of rescue vehicles and emergency radio buoys;
  • the ability to perform operational checks of radio equipment, power sources and antennas, identify and localize malfunctions.
