Learning outcomes of course unit

Successful completion of the programme involves acquiring the learning outcomes as follows:

– to make various knots, bends, hitches and whippings;

– to locate all the sounding pipes, filling pipes and air pipes on board and draw up a location plan;

– to observe and record the daily soundings of tanks, bilges and other waterproof compartments;

– to use calibration/sounding tables for determining ballast tank quantities after applying various corrections;

– to assist in lubrication of deck equipment and understand lubrication techniques;

– to breakout new coils of ropes and wires. Correctly stow wires and ropes with due regard to their preservation;

– to assist in receiving fresh water from ashore and from barges;

– to rig clusters and portable lights;

– to assist with maintenance of antenna and guy wires;

–to keep a deck and gangway watch and tend mooring lines and gangway;

– to rig and use stages under supervision;

– to rig and use bosun's chair for works aloft under supervision;

– to assist crew with splicing of ropes and wires;

– to maintain fairleads;

– to receive, check, stow and secure ship's stores;

– to assist with rigging of pilot ladder and combination ladders, including pilot hoist (if fitted). Monitor Pilot's safety when embarking and disembarking;

– to assist crew in checking condition of pilot ladder ropes, steps and securing arrangements;

– to assist crew in rigging accommodation ladder, gangway and gangway net;

– to prepare steel plates and other surfaces for protective coating;

– to demonstrate various painting techniques and correct procedure for mixing of paints;

– to identify and understand use of purging points provided on hydraulic lines and machinery;

– to be aware of location of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the paints onboard and demonstrate awareness of action to be taken in an emergency.

The purpose of the Educational Training is to provide the initial stage of training of the 1st year students in the specialization "Navigation and Seagoing Ships’ Handling" in accordance with the requirements of the STCW-78, as amended, namely:

– initial practical training;

– consolidation of theoretical and practical knowledge obtained by higher education students while studying the disciplines of specialty and specialization (Seamanship Practice, Safety and Security at Sea, Ocean Routes of the World, Ship’s Theory and Architecture, etc.);

– familiarization of higher education students with the ship, organization of work and service on sea vessels;

– familiarization with the organization of watchkeeping service when a ship is underway or at port ;

– practical training for the qualification of the Watch Officer  at the familiarization level.

The objective of Educational Training:

– study of the ship’s architecture (main parts of the vessel), terms and definitions used on board the vessel;

– familiarization with the methods of operating ship devices;

– study of the watchkeeping when a ship is underway and at berth;

– acquisition of skills in wheel operation and execution of wheel commands;

– study and practical application of various methods of carrying out proper visual and auditory observation;

– study of the use of the ship's emergency equipment and actions in various emergency situations;

– acquisition of skills in the use of life-saving appliances (LSA) and equipment and maintenance of equipment, devices and systems in operational condition to ensure the safety of the ship and people;

– study of lights and signs of ships, flags, light signaling.
