Learning outcomes of course unit

Knowledge of precaution measures to be used to prevent marine environment pollution, ability to apply pollution control methods and to use respective equipment.

Knowledge and understanding the basis of watertightness and effects of damage and further flooding of any ship’s compartment on the ship’s draft and stability, and measures necessary for safe draft and stability ensuring.

Knowledge of IMO requirements for ship’s stability.

Knowledge of fire types, firefighting systems function; an ability to extinguish fires using proper equipment, including fuel systems fires; ability to conduct fire-fighting drills.

Skills in conducting abandon ship drills and ability to operate lifeboats, life rafts and duty-rescue boats, launching devices, and their appliances.

Ability of practical application of medical advice and medical consultations obtained via radio, namely the ability to take effective measures on the basis of such knowledge in case of accidents or diseases typical for shipboard conditions.

Skills in personal survival, personal safety ensuring and knowledge of social responsibilities on board ship.

Knowledge of international requirements for ship’s life-saving appliances.

Ability to apply life-saving appliances and devices, fire-fighting systems and other safety systems and maintain their operational condition.

Knowledge of international and local laws and regulations on the safety of human life at sea and protection of marine environment and their implementation.

Content of course unit

The acquisition of learning outcomes for the educational component is achieved by studying the educational material in the following sections:

Basics of safety and security at sea.

Basics of the organization and procedures of rescue at sea. Personal safety and public duties of seafarers.

The struggle of the crew for the survivability of the ship.

Ship rescue equipment, their use and operation.

Ensuring protection of ships, cargo, crew and passengers.

Provision of medical assistance on board.

Equipment (if applicable) Indoor 50-meter swimming pool. A comprehensive simulator for combating water on ships. A comprehensive simulator for fighting fires on ships. Firefighter's equipment. A set of ship's emergency equipment. Conventional lifeboats and liferafts. Complex simulator for lowering and raising lifeboats. Individual means of rescue on water. Radio equipment. Medical simulators, models, tools and accessories.
