The cadet should know:

• Requirements for the mandatory equipment of sea vessels with means of communication and power sources (in accordance with the requirements of the GMDSS);
• Provisions of the Radio Regulations, SOLAS regarding radio communication;
• Technical characteristics and principles of operation of ship systems and radio communication devices, including radio equipment of survival crafts;
• Procedures of radiotelephone communication, identifiers of ship and shore stations;
• Basic terms, definitions and special rules relating to the use of frequencies in the MMS;
• Procedures for technical operation, regular inspections and testing of ship radio communication equipment;
• Rules for using control and measuring devices for finding malfunctions of ship's radio equipment.

The cadet must be able to:

• Turn on, prepare for work, carry out software installations and settings of the ship's radio communication equipment and power sources, including the radio equipment of survival craft;
• Carry out radiotelephone communications with assigned priority;
• Work with international manuals on radio communications;
• Test equipment, evaluate its performance;
• Use technical documentation of manufacturers of radio communication equipment, understand electrical structural diagrams;
• Find and localize malfunctions of radio communication devices with accuracy to the module;
• Use regular control and measuring devices.
