- knowledge of the general principles of maintenance and repair of navigation equipment and means of external radio communication on the ship's bridge;
- knowledge of the principles of operation, structure and rules of navigation aids operation:
- ship navigation radar stations,
- global navigation satellite systems,
- automatic identification system,
- electronic cartographic information system,
- ship compasses, logs, echo sounders,
- marine autopilots,
- dynamic positioning systems,
- voyage data recorders,
- electrical interfaces of navigation equipment;
- knowledge of the principles of operation, structure and rules of operation of external communication means:
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety Communication System (GMDDS),
- terrestrial radio communication systems of the VHF, MF, HF bands, digital selective calling,
- INMARSAT, COSPAS-SARSAT, Iridium systems and on-board ship means of satellite communication,
- Radio equipment of rescue boats, emergency position indicating radio beacon, search and rescue transponder, portable emergency VHF radios, ship security alert system;
- ability to carry out internal and external testing of equipment, routine work and replacement of equipment modules in the on-board conditions.
