Learning outcomes of course unit |
- The ability to carry out a safe engine watch on a ship.
- The ability to operate, observe, evaluate the work and safely maintain the ship’s power plant without its power being limited, auxiliary systems and related control systems, and to control the power plant machinery operation.
- The ability to operate electrical, electronic equipment and control systems.
- The ability to use methods of optimal control of the ship power plant when the ship’s sailing conditions change, while setting up automation means and diagnosing in case of malfunctions.
- The ability to perform an operational analysis of the condition in accordance with TOR (technical operation rules) requirements and determine the need to restore control systems and spare units.
- The ability to use methods of engineering forecasting and theories of reliability of complex systems and modern methods of their diagnosis for systems of monitoring the technical condition of ship’s electrical equipment and automation means during their operation.

Content of course unit |
- Definition of the discipline object and subject.
- Ensuring the effective operation and safety of the ship’s power plant and auxiliaries.
- Typical SPP (ship power plant) control algorithms at autonomous, parallel and emergency operation. Rules for compiling and describing algorithms of SPP operation and control.
- Knowledge and ability to apply effective management of engine room department resources.
- Principles to be followed while keeping watch at sea and in port. Safety measures and procedures in emergency situations.
- Configuration and design of the main control panel. Methods of generators excitation, conditions of starting diesel generators in parallel operation in an automatic mode. Equipment and safe operation conditions of ship generators and a power distribution system. ACS (automatic control system) of starting the emergency power supply.
- Rules of automation means operation.
