Learning outcomes of course unit
  • The ability to organize technical support by ship means of terrestrial and satellite communication for conducting search and rescue operations.
  • The ability to choose and use systems, means of communication, frequencies and ship equipment modes of operation, which are most suitable for the specific conditions for conducting search and rescue operations.
  • The ability to organize and provide communication in different navigation areas in ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore directions.
  • The ability to organize gathering, analysis, and generalization of maritime safety information obtained from available ship navigation and communication means, in order to optimize actions during search and rescue operations.
  • The ability to use backup systems, means, devices of marine communication and navigation channels in case of main equipment failure.
  • The ability to organize technical support and provide radio communication in the event that the vessel is designated as a surface search coordinator in the search and rescue operations.

  • Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) systems and equipment.
  • Automatic identification system (AIS) and long-range identification and tracking system (LRIT).
  • Practical actions on organization and providing communication in search and rescue operations.
